Overrated Bands/Artists

It's safe to say that no matter where you were this weekend, you heard a top 100 of all-time countdown on a classic rock station, a pop station, or a disco/dance station. Every year for Memorial Weekend, 4th of July Weekend, and Labor Day Weekend the radio stations compile these "best of" or top 100 countdowns. I usually am in agreement with many of their choices, but there are always a few bands/artists that rank in good spots that I don't feel deserve it. Here is a list of bands/artists that I think are WAY overrated:

NIRVANA- I am so tired of hearing how they changed music! There were so many better bands during that time period. Enough already!

PINK FLOYD- These guys were talented, but I think they get a lot more credit than they deserved. Comfortably Numb, my ass.

AEROSMITH- Great band back in the 70's then it was all downhill. Once they did that "Armageddon" ballad, it was all over. But, they had to make it worse by performing with the Backstreet Boys a few years back during a Superbowl Halftime Show, sell-outs indeed!

REM- I was a fan of REM back in the very late 80's and very early 90's until I realized what whiney bastards these guys are. Overrated and overplayed!

THE GRATEFUL DEAD- I just don't get it........

KISS- With or without the make-up they sucked some serious ass!

STING- The Police were great. The first solo Sting album, good. Now, GIVE ME A BREAK! Enough already!

ELVIS PRESLEY- Yup, I said it. He was not the "King" of anything. He was a good looking guy who got handed songs that he did not write and was told to sing and dance. He was exactly what you are seeing today, good looking people who record companies can market with song and movies. The Beatles were the kings, those guys started it all.......

Who do you think is the most overrated! Let the debate/discussion begin!

And that other guy, Bruce Springsteen.

REM? Are you smoking two-day old hotdogs or something? Harrumph!

I've seen Aerosmith 3x and I have no idea why. Saw them in the 70's, the 90's and 20's. I'm done with them and I always change the station if they come on. I'm also done with Pink Floyd too.Never got into Nirvana, REM is okay too. I will never get tired of Alice Cooper or Ozzie. I blast Ozzie or Black Sabbeth when they come on or I play it. It's the only way to enjoy him.(at least I don't blast out my neighbors)I'd probably get a fine.

Elvis is DEAD - why do we still have to hear about his b-day every year! My friends can't believe I don't like his music. And sorry, you'll hate this, but I can't stand Springsteen either - his voice sucks.

Nicole-
The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, The Eagles, Van Halen(David Lee Roth years), Neil Young, Bon Jovi, U2, Fleetwood Mac, stuff like that I love.....

afromabq-

I can understand why someone would not like Springsteen. I was not crazy about him until I was in my late teens. He is one of the greatest songwriters of all time and one of the greatest live performers of all time....it's weird about the Boss, people either love or hate him....

Okay, I still think that seeing Aerosmith in 2001 ranks up there as an awesome moment for me. Maybe it was the stress release that I got from it (they played a week after 9/11), but they were NOT overrated that night.

I have to agree w/ REM, though. I lived in Athens for 4 years, saw Michael Stipe around town, saw the history and I still JUST DON'T CARE.

And I think Pearl Jam has to go up there. Sure, they're fun, and the concert was entertaining, but they just don't do it for me.

C-Mac, honey, seeing what you listen to makes me wonder if I just wasn't born in the wrong decade...

Muuuuuse! I love rap, jazz, hip hop, classical, pretty much everything outsode of country music. I appreciate classic rock the most because those artists/groups are timeless and the quality of the music and lyrics is far superior to anything else in my opinion......

I think Mariah Carey is so overrated.
I like to thank you and everyone for helping me on making "The List". ;)

Classic rock rocks!

That should have been the fact I think I *was* born in the wrong decade. I grew up on all that classic rock stuff and listen to it regularly. That's not to say I don't crank up the volume when hometown boy Ludacris comes on... I am an equal-opportunity music lover.

I agree Muse, I need my rap fix too. Rap/dance is basically all I run to. It keeps me moving!

Freaky, was it the Pink Floyd remark or the Aerosmith remark? Or are you a closet Elvis fan?

Wait! What about the Aerosmith/Run DMC mix of "Walk this Way?" COME ON! Steven Tyler? Where's the love?

Well, as long as you're cool with Van Morrison, I'm cool with you!

The KING (Elvis) can not be on the list!!!!! Its just not right!!!!

Charlie: I agree completely with everything you said. Though I have liked a couple songs from some of the artists you mentioned, I'm inclined to believed they are way overrated also.

Now, Springsteen, though he is kind of before my time, is a poet. His music is genius. Saw him on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducting U2 (another fave of mine) and was absolutely charmed by him.

Beatles = amazing
Floyd is spectacular, and you a*s must be numb from the "corn on the cob" incident you had this weekend...(Was I not supposed to say that?)...The Dead is just as great...Everything elese I agree with ya.

What is WITH the "Dead Heads"???? I always thought their stuff was silly fluff. Do you have to be tripping to like it? Maybe so.

I love a lot of your other "overrated" choices, though. (and I like most of your favorites, although Billy Joel is a bit lightweight for me.)

Nicole: I LOVE Elvis Costello...musical genius. Different strokes...

Never been a big Nirvana fan.

Actually, don't like Springsteen either, and I'm from Philly for God's sake! I know I have a problem :)

Oh my Lord, hearing "Springsteen is before my time" scares the shit out of me, honestly ;op

Charlie: I agree 100% with your list. I would, however, have to also agree with Bridget and Anonymous about Bruce Springsteen. I grew up in Jersey where everyone loved him but I don't get it. Good song writer? Well...maybe. But his screaming drives me crazy. Ugh!!

Steph said...

Wow - whoever thought so many people wouldn't love Bruce?
I'm dumbfounded; I think he's a genius. :)

Charlie Mc said...

Bruce is a genius, no question about it. Most people are turned off by his voice and never really look at the stories and the content of his lyrics.

I am surprised nobody mentioned Meatloaf.
