UNDERrated Bands/Artists

As you all know, I write posts about music regularly. I recently posted a blog about the most OVERRATED bands/artists. We all came up with some good selections. Ok, today's post is about UNDERRATED bands/artists. What bands or artists do you feel are amazing but don't get the credit or recognition they deserve by critics, the media, or music fans. Here is a short list that I came up with:

The Cult- What can I say??!! This band kicked ass! "She Sells Sanctuary" "Fire Woman" and "Sweet Soul Sister" were just some of their hits. AMAZING band that never got their props!

Billy Squier- This guy kicked ass up and down the charts in the 1980's. "The Stroke", "Lonely is the Night", "In the Dark", "My Kinda Lover", "Rock Me Tonite", and "Everybody wants You" were just some of his songs. This guy had a great voice, a great band, and a good rock edge.

Jackson Browne- Although he was pretty popular in the 1970's and is in the rock n' roll hall of fame (inducted 2004) he never got the fanfare he deserved. Amazing vocalist and writer!

Bob Seger- Inducted into the rock n' roll hall of fame in 2004 also, Bob Seger really flew under the radar for years. He is another great singer/songwriter that was never in the limelight too often.

Triumph- A 1980's rock band that was amazing. Great lyrics, amazing musical compositions, and great live performances. MTV put them on the map in the 80's but they never got the attention they should have. If you've never heard their music, check it out!

Kansas- Another 70's/80's rock band that never got the credit they deserved. You all probably know "Dust In the Wind" but that was far from their best.

Candlebox- Great early 90's band. I loved many of their songs, but they vanished off the face of the planet. I thought they were very talented. "Far Behind" and "You" were incredible tracks!!!

Let's hear your selections for most underrated bands/artists......

i feel ya on that one. i too think Kansas could have had a lil more recognition then the "one hit wonder" of "dust in the wind" they were so overlooked.

Ah yes Billy Squire...I loved that dude! Definately underrated!

INXS - The Devil Inside was very popular but the rest of their stuff didn't do so well, I think they were/are underrated.

Five for Fighting - He is an amazing songwriter and just isn't get the support he needs. Underrated.

Eric Johnson - Amazing guitar player, loved his Cliffs of Dover CD and he has a new one come out. Again not really any support and totally underrated.

Ok...I could go on with alot more, but I will stop there for now. This is my favorite topic! You know how I LOVE my music!!! :-)

Kansas is one of my favorites! I don't know who I would say is underrated as my eclectic tastes don't really fit in to the under and voer rating of music.

Wow, two kansas fans!! haha

Diane, I agree with you on INXS, their Kick album was amazing, but the older stuff rocked!!!!

I don't have a bad to add (not yet, anyway, let me think on it), but props on the Billy Squier mention - he was my first REAL concert, I loved the guy, I think I saw him 2 or 3 times total (I think one was with Def Leppard).

I definitely have to agree with you on Bob Seeger (and the Silver Bullet Band) - that was one of the albums I always used to steal from my dad's truck and listen to.

Jimmy Eat World - they still don't even touch on most peoples' radar, and yes, as a friend once said, they're very "frat rock," but I love them and think they merge a lot of different sounds which sound great.

N.E.R.D. - I picked this up from my ex (one of the few things I'm greatful for). Edgy, fun, and very creative. The beats are very unique (and sampled often), and their lyrics aren't trite and overly simple. And they don't feel the need to talk about bitches and hos and money all the time.

And yeah, I like me some Kansas.

Styk was great for thier time. I thought they were pretty creative.
Loooove Billy Squire too. Also Rush was good too!

Muse- Seger was great, so many good songs!

Supplymadam, Styx and Rush were good, but, in my opinion, I think they got more than their fair share of attention and recognition, no?

Betel, I agree with Boston, they were great but never really got the fanfare!!!!!

This is an easy one: Simple Minds. Forget "Don't You Forget About Me" from The Breakfast Club. They didn't write that. Check out "New Gold Dream" and "Sparkle in the Rain". Fanfuckingtastic albums! They are still recording, still touring, still noteworthy in Europe.

HECK YEAH VAST! If you like vast I suggest a band named CAKE, CAKE has awesome lyrics and have only been in the limelight once for one of their "mainstream" songs that doesnt even touch their talent, I suggest their first cd motorcade of genorosity before others they have though

Oh man, Betelgeuse is in my era, but he's missing Blue Oyster Cult, "Don't fear the reaper" (and you'll appreciate this CMac - they're originally from Long Island). Also Jefferson Airplane/or Starship(depending when you listened to them)- "Miracles." I could listen to that song over and over and over . . . .

Oh.. I really think Bad English was underrated too and they even had Tom Waite as their lead singer!

Oops - Long Island and Long Beach are two different places huh?

A, Long Beach is a part of Long Island.....

I LOVE Candlebox! I still carry that CD around in my truck and listen to it when I know I won't have to stop the vehicle until it's over.

I think The Calling is underrated. I could be wrong, but I don't hear much about them . . . not like stupid Britney or anything.

I totally agree on Billy Squier and Candlebox. My "underrated" bands lean more towards the punk side...but if they weren't underrated, they would probably be considered sellouts (Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Jane's Addiction, The Replacements...).

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Song? Love on the Wrong Side of Town.

Shawn Phillips: voice like a god.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes: Springsteen lite, but made from the same mold.

Deni Bonet: how many people would love her, who have never heard of her?

Bob Seger: still my favorite "road trip" music after all these years.

Blue Oytser Cult: got caught up in commercialism, or so some would like to claim after about halfway through their career, and I do like their early stuff better, but from "Agents of Fortune" on, I still like it.

Motels: tight sound, good vocals.
