So, the night before my birthday bash I am going to see John Mellencamp at Jones Beach! I actually saw him a few times over the years and he's pretty good! John Fogerty is opening up for him who is also kick-ass.
I love concerts at Jones Beach Amphitheatre. It is one of the best places to see a show. Just you, your friends, the music, and the ocean...it's really great. The tailgating is great there too. We'll probably go about 3pm or 4pm for the 7pm show. I'll bring the bbq, the booze, the frisbee, and the cd's....should be a good primer coat for my stomach before my party the next night.
To me, there's nothing like seeing a band or artist live. I've seen well over 100 concerts in my life. Here are my top 5:
July 24, 2003 Bruce Springsteen-Giants Stadium, NJ. Bruce is great all the time, but this show was AMAZING! He played from 8pm-12:10am. I was absolutely blown away. Not to mention the tailgate from 12 noon until showtime!
August 2, 2002 Bruce Springsteen-Madison Square Garden, NYC. This was a moving night. The kickoff to the Rising tour. Bruce sang most of his songs off "The Rising" album which spoke a great deal about the recent events of 9/11/01, it was a great night.
July 3, 1999 Tom Petty-Jones Beach, LI, NY. Amazing show!!!! Tailgate was great, weather was amazing. Tom kicked ass that night. Fireworks on the beach after...
Sometime in 1987, Motley Crue with Whitesnake as opening act, MSG, NYC. A KICK ASS SHOW! Whitesnake rocked for about an hour and a half, then Crue just kicked ass!!!
Sometime in 1987, Def Leppard-Nassau Coliseum, LI, NY. This was the kickoff of the Hysteria tour, what a show. I had general admission tickets and got there about 12 hours before the show. My friends and I landed front row! We could not hear for about a week, but it was worth it.
I've seen so many great shows, but I'll limit it to those 5. Let's hear some of your top shows......

I also saw John Mellencamp at the Garden in 2000.
* Aerosmith, 9/17/01. First event at the ampitheatre post-9/11. Everyone was scared of loud noises until the band came up and good ol' Steven Tyler wore his ass-tight flag pants with the fringe and we all forgot about it for awhile.
* Any Cowboy Mouth show I've ever attended.
* The tiny show put on by Mel & the Party Hats, an 80s cover band - just too much fun
The best concert I have ever been to was Steve Miller Band back in 1996 I think it was, at Penn State and it was by far the best concert I have ever seen. I don't even like SMB but they were phenomenal live!
AC/DC at walnut creek amplitheater when i was in college in Raleigh NC. The single loudest concert i've ever been to.
Lolapalozza 92. pearl jam, ministry, red hot chili peppers, rage against the machine, etc. etc.
G love and Special Sauce, New Orleans House of Blues special show this past january
Tenacious D, Tabernacle in Atlanta 2002
Rolling Stones, Carter Finley Stadium Raleigh NC Vodoo Lounge Tour
Roger Waters Summer 2002 Prague Czech Republic
I've also seen Tom Petty, but it was one of the worst shows i've been to. It was an outdoor amplitheater in the middle of a thunderstorm with lightning all around. He was so stoned you couldn't understand him.
Aerosmith in about 94 was pretty good too.
WoodStock 99. It was an experience I'll never forget
I also LOVE live concerts (preferably outdoors)...Top 5 in no order.
James Taylor - 6/2003 - Poconos Outdoor Venue at a Ski Resort - This was my 2nd time seeing James and he is amazing every time. Seeing him again this July! :)
Bon Jovi - 2003 - Veterans Stadium Philly - These guys are my favorite band and I've seen them 5 times now so I just can say enough how they rock!!
Peter Cincotti - 6/2002 - A little Jazz Venue in Delaware.
Billy Joel/Elton John - 2002 - Tweeter Center, Camden NJ. These guys are amazing, especially playing together.
TobyMac/Kirk Franklin - 2003 - Electric Factory, Philadelphia. This concert combined hip hop and gospel. It was amazing!!
I've seen so many other great shows it is really hard to rate. I am going to see James Taylor, Duran Duran and Tom Petty this July alone! I love my outdoor summer shows!
1979 - Mile High Stadium/Denver - Heart, Ted Nugent, UFO, and the Cars.
1983 - Waikiki Shell/Honolulu - George Benson
2004 - Journal Pavilion/ABQ - Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago.
2005 - Isleta Casino/ABQ - Doobie Brothers (w/o Michael, but they still have it!)
For your birthday I'll make you a cut out of John Mellencamp! ;)
I think I saw that same Crue show in Philly - was that the Girls, Girls tour where Tommy Lee was in that drum cage thing that rose up and spun around?? Wicked cool.
Concerts I REMEMBER going to are Kinks (first concert, I was like 12 or something), Billy Squier, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, WASP, Paul McCartney, Creed... shit, that's all I can remember, I'm sure there are more.
Vicki, indeed it was the girls, girls, girls tour! That cage kicked ass. I saw so many concerts in '87 when I was a mere Freshman in high school....
Jones Beach is such a GREAT place to see a concert. The best one I saw there was Paul Simon, the Graceland tour.
