Have any of you ever been really sad or devastated by the death of a famous person or celebrity? Is that normal? I once worked with a guy who took an entire week off when Jerry Garcia passed away. Is that extreme, or can an artist, politician, or celebrity really make that much of an impact on one's life? I would be really sad if Springsteen or Billy Joel passed because their music has touched me so much. Here are the celebrities that have passed that I was most saddened by:
Jackie Gleason
John Candy
Chris Farley
Frank Sinatra
John Kennedy Jr.
John Lennon
George Harrison
Barry White
Mickey Mantle
Joe DiMaggio
What famous person's death affected you most? What famous person's death in the future would affect you the most?

That guy from the odd couple, what's his name? He died like last year but he was old but still alt of peolpe were sad.
Wait. There's someone singing - what the ..? Ohhhh. If you're taking requests, how about a Springsteen video?
I was pretty bummed when John Belushi died. So young, and such a stupid way to go.
Ok, if one person died that would really have an effect me it would be....my mom! She's not famous but I always go to her for advice.
I was really saddened by Princess Diana's death. I grew up admiring her and all her charity work. She seemed like such a good person who got a rotten deal. It was so tragic the way she died.
And John Ritter cause I loved him in Three's Company. He was so funny.
Anonymous here:
LONG PAST: JFK, Roosevelt
RECENT PAST: Luther Vandross. A talent that is so rare and will be sorely missed.
PAST/FUTURE: Every single military personnel that has and will die for the sake of our country and freedom!
layne staley. by far.
I think I mourn the passing of famous people because I, and others, won't be able to experience the talent they shared. Almost like I'm mourning what will never be again. Or I'm sadded at the way they died, for example Princess Diana - completely unnecessary death.
Definitely
John Lennon
Sam Kinison (don't know why)
John Belushi
John Candy
John Ritter
JFK Jr.
Daryl Kyle (pitcher)
heck, even Princess Di
Here's my list:
My Dad(who died in 1980)
My Grandfather(who died in 1974)
My Grandmother(who died in 2004)
John F. Kennedy (because I remember my father crying)
Robert Kennedy
John Lennon(He died a month before my dad)
Princess Diana
John Ritter
Jerry Orbach(my all time Law and Order idol)
A famous person that I would mourn for would be:
Paul Mcartney
Mick Jagger
President Reagan's death was sad to me. He was such a joyful man and adored is wife.
At the risk of seeing shallow, I'll only list celebrities. Isn't that what you asked about??
Princess Diana (not sure exactly why)
John Lennon (showing my age, I was devastated!)
Barry White (how many babies were conceived to his music??)
John Denver (again, showing my age...an nerdiness)
George Burns (because I thought he'd live forever)
Future? I may have to think on that one and come back later. I like Anonymous's answer, particularly since I have a son in the army, but I'm not sure they qualify as individual celebrities.
anonymous here....sorry wordwhiz....i meant heros!
thank your son from me. both my parents were in the military.
;0)
I shed a tear for the death of John Elway's football career when he retired...and I used to take a day off from school when the Bronco's lost the Super Bowl. Let's just say I cashed in a lot on that one!
wait, hang on mick jagger isnt dead.
So when we make a vote on your poll to the left, do you know what each person is voting? I mean, I wouldn't really want you to know that I really am a lesbo...j/k
;-)
nah, I just see what you see, the totals...i can't tell who votes for what....
go ahead and call me a redneck from the south, but the death of dale earnhart got to me a little bit.
Ear Shot - Call me a redneck too, but that was a tough one. I work in the racing industry, so that was a hard blow.
Belushi, Ritter, Stevie Ray Vaughn are a few that I miss.
Ones that will be bad in the future will be Pacino, DeNiro and any other legend.
But, truthfully, I don't know what the hell I'm going to do without my mom. That's the only one that would really cause a serious impact.
I also was very sad by John Ritter's death. I think he was a great man.
I felt a little sad when the following people passed on:
Yasser Arafat
Christopher Reed
Barry White
Luther Vandross
Frank Sinatra
Princess Diana
Pres Regan
I was DEVASTATED when John Lennon died, even though I was only 9. I was just crushed. Kurt Cobain was a shocker too...although looking back, I can't figure out why I was shocked.
If Jon Bon Jovi dies before I get a chance with him, I will most certainly be upset. You'll hear me bawling from here.
Shit I forgot about Randy Rhoads!!!!
Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon. The guys from Grumpy Old Men. I loved them both.
I was sad when President Reagan died, too.
That's all I can think of right now.
The passing of Genelle Taney of Great Neck, NY had the biggest impact on my life
Here's my list..
Princess Diana
JFK Jr
Ronald Reagan
Carroll O'Connor (yes, Archie Bunker) - he always made me laugh out loud!!
Joe Dimaggio's nephew comes into my bar and we dance all the time :)
John Lennon was, by far, the worst. I felt as grief stricken as if I had known him personally.
Princess Diana's death was shocking and sad, mostly when I saw the note to "Mummy" on the top of the casket. As a mother, I just lost it.
